A colourful mix of antiquity and Byzantine culture spiced up with Ottoman influence, the sea, and Greek gyros – this is Thessaloniki. The symbol of the city is the White Tower, one of the towers of the original city fortifications, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city. Other famous Thessaloniki monuments include Arch of Galerius, a triumphal arch over the main avenue Egnatia, and the nearby Rotunda. The city is also full of Byzantine churches and basilicas. Visit the Basilica of St. Demetrius, patron of the city. It is the oldest Christian cathedral with richly decorated columns and beautiful mosaics. Another important church is the Church of the Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sofia), with a huge dome and a ceiling mosaic depicting the Ascension.

Another place to visit is the ancient district of Kastro (also known as Ano Poli), the only original part of Thessaloniki which was preserved after the devastating fire of the city in 1917. You will be charmed by its narrow streets lined with old houses, and you will also find picturesque corners and souvenir shops there. If you like museums, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture.

Also take a walk along the waterfront promenade from the city centre to the wharf. The trip would not be complete without tasting Greek cuisine. Try olives, feta cheese, Greek salad, and gyros.
