The approach bridge at Václav Havel Airport Prague, which forms the Aviatická and K Letišti streets interchange, will be expanded to three lanes. The project, which is part of Prague Airport’s Ready for the Future development plans, will start on 16 September 2024. The new widened approach bridge is expected to be completed in May 2025.

“Building transport infrastructure is among the key areas of the airport’s planned development. We have already secured a large-capacity trolleybus connection, and preparations are underway for the implementation of a railway line between the airport and the centre of Prague. In addition, we are also focusing on increasing road capacity. Getting ready for the expected future growth in passenger volumes and the related development of terminal capacities, we are planning to widen the approach bridge close to the airport on Aviatická street. In the future, we expect to more than double the number of parking places in the airport area, including a central recharging point for electric vehicles. In this way, we will ensure an easier journey to the airport and greater comfort for passengers,” Martin Kučera, Member of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said as he shared the details of the planned changes.

The construction of a wider approach bridge on Aviatická street on airport premises aims to make the future elevated interchange safer, ensure its increased capacity, and that standards meet the growing needs and traffic requirements of the future airport development plans. The bridge in its new design is expected to be completed in May. It will have two airport approach lanes and an additional separate lane to connect from the interchange elevated merging lane.

Work on the approach bridge will begin on 16 September this year with the dismantling of public lighting and the construction of temporary crossings. Until the end of September, traffic will be reduced to one lane; the same restrictions will also be applied on the airport departure bridge. Starting this October, the approach bridge will be dismantled, and the supporting structure and pillars will be demolished. Until the completion of all works, the approach traffic to the airport will be reduced to one lane, which will be crossing the temporary road in its centre lane. Departure traffic from the airport via Aviatická and Schengenská streets will be also reduced to one lane with vehicles leaving the airport via a departure bridge crossing the K Letišti road.

At the moment, the K Letišti road is also undergoing reconstruction. Traffic in both directions is funnelled into one lane and controlled using traffic lights. In the next stages, from 23 September to 25 October, in the direction to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the stops of city and suburban public transit lines will be temporarily merged and only the existing U Hangáru stop (in front of the parking area D) will be used. In the direction of the city centre, the U Hangáru stop will be temporarily cancelled and the stops of city and suburban public transit lines will be temporarily moved to Jana Kašpara street.
